The Macao Human Resource Monitor (MHRM) Project
Welcome to the home of the MHRM Project. The MHRM Project is ITRC’s long-term research that regularly measures job satisfaction levels and other key HR indicators of Macao’s general labor force, with particular focus on those working in the hospitality, gaming and tourism industries.
Our aim is to provide policy planners, decision makers, and management executives in the public and private sectors with up-to-date and insightful information regarding the state and sentiments of Macao's human resources and bring to light relevant work-related issues. Findings of the project provide additional analysis or supplementary information to those currently provided by the Macao Census and Statistics Department (DSEC). Because the project runs for the long-term, it aims to also provide a source of reference and information of short- and long-term changes in labor-related issues and manpower information. We hope that such information will aid organizations to evaluate the impact and effectiveness of their strategic HR management practices and policies over time.
Key variables monitored regularly
The project collects data twice yearly (in June and December). Since 2012, the MHRM Project has been collecting survey data on:
Job satisfaction (general, job security, pay, social, and supervisory)
Perceived fairness of compensation and benefits
Job stress
Intent-to-stay
Since 2013, the project began collecting data on parts of the:
Subjective well-being (SWB) measure advocated by the OECD, namely satisfaction with life and domain evaluation
Beginning 2016, the project began collecting data on:
Work-life balance
Life happiness, satisfaction with life, and mental health
Background
MHRM was formally launched in 2012 with the first annual report (pilot) published in 2013, a copy of which can be obtained at here. Interested parties should subscribe so they get notified by email as soon as new analyses and information are available.
The earlier genesis of this project and its long-term importance to Macao was recognized and initiated by IFTM as early as mid-2002. At the time, IFTM worked closely with the European Union via the Macao-Europe Center for Advanced Tourism Studies (ME-CATS) and one of the Center's first initiatives was the creation of a Human Resource Development Strategic Monitoring System (HRDSMS), in collaboration with Hotelschool the Hague and NHTV (Breda), our European partners. At the time of its inception in 2002, Macao was just gearing up for what would become a continuing growth in HR challenges. Read a copy of the 2002 report, and see how far the HR situation in Macao's tourism and hospitality industry has evolved since.

Reporting
We publish two reports online. A general report showing the trends in the key variables monitored above. We also publish ad hoc, special analysis reports focusing on one of the monitored variables providing more in-depth analysis and studies.
